Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers
Earlier this month (May 14, 2012), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service banded three federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker chicks who were born on land owned by Alabama Power near Lake Mitchell. The tiny chicks (between 7 and 9 days old) can now be tracked as they grow and move. About 30 red-cockaded woodpeckers live in rare stands of mountain longleaf pines around Lake Mitchell. It is only one of two privately owned sites in the state where the birds can be found. They can also be found on some public lands in the state. Alabama Power and other landowners in the area protect and manage the land as important habitat for the rare birds.
